Program

High School Program

This course is designed for students who do not have a high school diploma in their home country and began applying to a Canadian university.

These courses lead to an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and allow students to successfully prepare for admission to any university program. Main courses include English, Mathematics, Science, Business, Arts, Social Sciences and Computer Science.
To obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), students must earn 30 high school credits (including 18 required and 12 elective credits), 40 community hours, and pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).

International students are able to transfer partial credits earned in their home country into Ontario high school credits according to the PLAR.

University Preparation

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about 100% of students that attend private schools successfully enter university or college after graduation.

  • We know very well all the requirements and standards posed by universities and colleges and we know how to get there because we have done it for many years.
  • We always provide the necessary support for each student to reach his or her fullest potential so that this child and the whole class can benefit.

AP Program

Event Image

The College Board of the United States sets the curriculum for the courses that are offered and administers the examinations in AP courses. Students enrolled in the AP courses which are offered in biology, chemistry, physics, calculus, and English would study the curriculum set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education as well as the additional material in the AP curriculum. The Ontario credit would be granted based on the evaluation of the Ministry curriculum at that grade level. The extra work to complete the AP curriculum would be assessed using the AP scores of 1-5 and a maximum of 5% would be added to the student’s mark to recognize that they have completed their studies in more detail and in a shorter time period.

One of the advantages of the AP program is that it allows students to experience the rigour of a university-level course while still at high school. In addition, at those universities that participate in the AP program, the one-year course in that subject area.

Students in grades 9, 10, and 11 may enroll in PACE (Program for Academic and Creative Extension)/AP-Preparatory (AP-Prep) courses in science, mathematics, English, geography (grade 9), and history (grade 10). For grade 11 students, AP-Prep courses are available in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, English, and history. These courses are designed to prepare students for the AP curriculum in grade 12.

IB Program

Research shows that Diploma Programme graduates are confident and well-prepared for post-secondary studies. Studies also show that IB graduates have better retention rates at university, compared with their non-IB counterparts. Our students consistently graduate with IB scores four points above the world average.

However, the IB is more than a school curriculum that leads to post-secondary academic success. The internationally respected IB Programmes offer a continuum of learning from Senior Kindergarten through Year 12 with a focus on the growth of the whole student — on his academic and personal achievements. IB students love learning and are motivated to succeed, and the benefits begin early.

* Deran Academy is currently a candidate school for the Middle Years Programme (MYP). We are pursuing authorization as an IB World School.

The IB framework at Deran Academy supports a continuum of education-oriented around the following:

  • A focus on students and their development, with a program for every age and stage of their development;
  • Teaching students how to learn; the intentional teaching of learning skills such as study skills, self-management, and organization;
  • A commitment to teaching best practices from SK to Year 12.

IB Programmes do the following:

  • Encourage students to think critically and challenge assumptions;
  • Use complex, real-life examples to teach knowledge and skills;
  • Focus on understanding, not just remembering facts;
  • Teach students to drive their own learning;
  • Encourage students to consider both local and global contexts;
  • Develop well-rounded students who can collaborate effectively and act ethically.
